The hospitality industry is widely regarded as one of the unhealthiest industries there is. A study published in 2015 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in the US showed that the hospitality industry has the highest use of illegal drugs and ranked 3rd highest in excessive alcohol consumption. Studies in Australia & the UK found similar patterns. Cooks are 1.77 times and bartenders 2.33 times more likely than average to die from alcohol related disease (source), servers and bartenders rank 2nd & 4th as the most unhappy jobs in America (source) and a 2015 study by the US Department of Labor Statistics found bartending the 13th most dangerous job in the US (source), with bartenders more likely to die on the job that police officers.
The industry also lacks many of the safety nets and protections of other industries. Hourly or tip based pay means that paid sick leave is avoided at all costs, there are few organised industry unions supporting the rights and wellbeing of workers, healthcare and insurance is extremely variable and dependent upon country and employer and financial insecurity a constant cause of stress and anxiety.
The goal of Healthy Hospo is to improve the health and wellness of hospitality professionals across the industry through preventative measures so they are able to lead healthier, happier working lives and build more sustainable careers. The benefit to business owners in having more productive, healthier and engaged staff will result in more profitability, reduced days lost to sickness and reduced turnover of staff.
What is Healthy Hospo?
Healthy Hospo is a not for profit social enterprise run by people who have spent decades working in the hospitality industry with the goal is to build a happier, healthier and more productive hospitality industry around the world. It’s a multi-faceted project with a number of elements designed to a holistic platform for hospitality professionals around the world:
⦁ Website providing a free, confidential, information, advice and support platform
⦁ Events featuring practical workshops and talks on health and wellness
⦁ Seminars aimed at both hospitality workers and hospitality businesses
⦁ Consultancy working with employers and brands to improve the health of work places
WHO IS HEALTHY HOSPO?
Healthy Hospo works with professionals who have a passion and commitment to building a healthier, happier and more sustainable hospitality industry. We work with current and former bartenders, global brand ambassadors, industry professionals and external experts in the fields of mental health, nutrition, personal fitness, yoga and pilates.
The project is led by Tim Etherington-Judge, with over 20years experience within the industry including award winning bartender and global brand ambassador for Bulleit American whiskey who, after experience a life changing mental breakdown in 2016, decided that something had to change in the industry and he would dedicate his time and energy to helping others avoid what he went through.
